SRE – Special Religious Education

What is SRE?

The term “SRE” stands for ‘Special Religious Education’.
This is a set time that is available in all participating NSW public government schools where students have an allotted
time in their week to have accredited SRE teachers enter the school and teach them from a faith-based Curriculum.

How does it work?

All public-school students have the opportunity to ‘opt in’ to any available Special Religious Education available at their school. They can do that by getting signed parental permission either in the online enrolment system or getting a note from the school office.

Who is it for?

SRE is available for all students in participating local government schools as young as kindergarten through to year 10 and in some instances, there is opportunity to participate in some
SRE opportunities in Years 11 & 12.

Why does it matter?

This is an extremely important ministry.
For a lot of children, SRE could be the only opportunity they get to explore God’s Word and have their spiritual questions
answered from the Bible.

Curriculum

Primary School

The SRE Primary school curriculum is made up of three different resources. from CEP Connect.

This includes:
Beginning with God series for Kindergarten.
Connect A, B and C for Years 1 – 5.
and Big questions series for Year 6.

High School

The SRE Curriculum for High school is made up of multiple different mini series by CEP ThinkFaith that help teenagers dive into the bible each week.

Some included topics are:
Introduction to the bible for Years 7 – 8
Study on Ephesians Years 9 – 10
Jesus fact or fiction Years 11 – 12

I have the privilege of organising the SRE ministry that our church gets to be involved in throughout our local area and by God’s Grace it is flourishing!

I praise God for the efforts and faith of the volunteers who week in and week out go and share the good news of Jesus to students. This helps them to grow in their trust in Jesus and understanding of God’s word the bible.

SRE Teachers

Our SRE team is made up of 15+ authorised SRE teachers who teach anywhere
from 1 – 12 SRE classes a week!

Every teacher has a current Working with Children Check, Safe Ministry Training certification, and a Criminal Conviction Declaration. Additionally, they have completed 10 hours of SRE accreditation training and at least 2 hours of development training annually.

Teaching SRE is no small task and we need your prayers!
We would love support form God in teaching the bible so please pray for our SRE ministry.

Some things you could pray:

– That there would be enough volunteers for every year group at every school to have a SRE teacher.
– That young people will be able to learn about God and his son Jesus in the bible.
– That SRE will be a positive space for students to interact with the bible and learn about faith.
– For the teachers who give time out of their week to teach students about God.
